A root canal is an incredibly important procedure that can save a tooth from needing to be extracted.

Here at Kt2 Dental, our team are highly experienced at carrying out root canal treatment for patients and work with diligence and skill to restore the health and aesthetic of your tooth, wherever possible.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is necessary when the pulp inside your tooth becomes infected due to injury, decay or damage. Untreated tooth pulp infections can lead to a painful abscess, which may even result in tooth loss. With this in mind, if you have symptoms such as pain, a bad taste in your mouth, or a change to the shade of a tooth, you should make an appointment with us right away.

Time is of the essence when it comes to saving a tooth with a root canal. However, in some cases, there are no symptoms when a tooth is infected. It’s for this reason that we can’t stress how important routine hygienist and dentist appointments are, so we can spot problems with your teeth early. It’s always our aim to keep restorative treatment to an absolute minimum and to focus on preventive care.

How is a root canal performed?

Root canal treatment generally takes one to two appointments to carry out.

  • Your tooth is thoroughly examined so the extent of the infection can be established.
  • The infected matter is removed from your tooth under anaesthetic.
  • The root canals are filled to prevent bacteria from entering the tooth in the future.
  • The root canal filling is sealed with a filling or a crown to give function and aesthetic to your tooth.

Why will a root canal benefit me?

  • It treats any pain associated with the previously infected tooth.
  • Prevents infection from spreading to neighbouring teeth.
  • Saves your tooth from extraction.
  • Stops you from needing complex restorative treatment.
